BE YOURSELF AGAIN

The sun lay hidden in your gaze
when, by mere chance, we met;
the twilight of mistakes inhabited
your impassioned poet's soul.

I saw within your eyes a pale glimmer
of the first impulse of your journey,
and I knew, in the tender shock of our encounter,
that you longed for your lost star.

You are a stranger in barren land,
a prisoner of vile ambitions,
a fugitive from the voice of conscience,
you are what you are not — and it breaks you.

You can no longer go on; the air suffocates you,
stale, false, and merciless,
of that world built on nothing and for no one,
kingdom of the "self," selfish, unworthy, unmoved.

Fight! Fight! Do not let yourself be swept away
by the absurd machinery of life.
Be yourself again! Yourself! Let nothing and no one
darken the clarity of your gaze!
